Research interests

Ian Jones characterises solids on their atomic scale, principally using electron microscope techniques. In particular, he is interested in defect structures. Currently he is working on plasticity in hcp alloys (including zonal dislocations), biphase nanoparticles, ALCHEMI of TCP intermetallics and phase diagram modelling.

Ian Jones carried out his doctoral thesis work at Birmingham on 1 MeV electron microscopy. Most of his subsequent work has involved electron microscopy: diffraction contrast analysis of secondary defects and high spatial resolution chemical analysis. He is currently Director of the Centre for Electron Microscopy at the University of Birmingham.
